TRUE MONARCHY IS OF THE SPIRIT AND MARKS WHAT WE HAVE LOST
In our modern, technology-driven world, the idea of monarchy seems sadly out of place, sadly anachronistic. But there is an aspect to monarchy that we would do well to take note of. Monarchy can of course be subsumed with arrogance and power. But there is a spiritual aspect to monarchy that we would do well to remember and take note of. The reason monarchy appears to be anachronistic to our modern way of thinking is because we have created what is essentially a materialistic world. Everything has a price, and everything can be quantified. But this is the tragedy of our times. Those things we in fact value the most are incapable of being priced or measured. Love, loyalty, integrity, faithfulness, purity, sincerity, righteousness, fealty, faith, honesty, duty, honour etc etc. The list could go on and on. But we must all recognise the power and validity of these qualities, and surely we must all recognise that if we do not live by such qualities then we fail as moral and essentially valuable human beings. Monarchy at its best represents the sacred and spiritual integrity of our nations. Monarchy at its best gives our nations meaning that transcends the mere mundane and the mere material. We as spiritual entities upon this material plane cannot hope to easily achieve any sort of spiritual awakening if our lives are lived within the bonds of materialism. Monarchies are famous for attempting to maintain their mystery. If it is a sham, that mystery serves no one. But when that mystery is genuine because the monarchy is a spiritual and sacred aspect of the mystic body of the nation, then all are served in ways that can never be quantified. When truly spiritual and mystical, our monarchies will be the embodiment of a nation’s holistic truth. And it is only a truly spiritual and mystical monarchy that can guide a nation into the living ONENESS that should be all humanity’s ultimate spiritual and sacred destiny.
Having a monarch as head of state might well appear anachronistic in our modern world. But the reason why it does appear anachronistic, even blatantly so, throws a spotlight on something about our modern world that is profoundly out of kilter with what our world should be. Monarchy appears so anachronistic because our modern world, our modern nation-state, the way we do things in our modern world, is essentially materialistic and mechanistic. Clearly monarchy can have no place in our modern world if that monarchy is about power and privilege, as so often in the past it was. The monarchy that actually can have a place in our modern world is that monarchy that manages to represent the spiritual aspect of a people, a spiritual aspect that is too often lacking in our modern times. The overly materialistic and mechanistic societies that we have created are ill-fitted to meet the needs of a people that might overtly respond to the materialistic and mechanistic, but which in its heart senses an unease, a profound loss, even an existential emptiness. We as people need to recognise that loss in ourselves, and our monarchies need to recognise that it is that spiritual need that they must relate to and respond to.
This is one of the great puzzles, and at the same time one of the great keys or clues to what is wrong with our world and what we have to do to bring our world into wholeness. The seemingly anachronistic monarchies that still exist in some of our nations, may not be the monarchies we would like to have and in spiritual terms need, but they do serve to highlight not so much what is anachronistic with regards to monarchy, but instead what is anachronistic about our modern nations and our modern world. Our world, our life styles, are materialistic, and consumed with a need for quantification, whereas if we are to be truly served by our nations, the emphasis has to shift to matters spiritual. The point needs to be repeated:
In our modern nations, everything has a price, and everything can be quantified. But this is the tragedy of our times. Those things we in fact value the most are incapable of being priced or measured. Love, loyalty, integrity, faithfulness, purity, sincerity, righteousness, fealty, faith, honesty, duty, honour etc etc. The list could go on and on. The key to our spiritual progressions aa individuals and nations is set deep with our own histories. Our monarchies have not been perfect, but they bear within them the great spiritual and mystical key to our spiritual awakening and unfolding.
Monarchy out of place in our times?
Yes, when our lives are materialistic.
True monarchy is of the spirit,
And marks what we have lost.
